Athlete of the Day

Mark Leger from New Brunswick

Never give up. When you have a bad day, it can only get better!

Did you walk, jog or run this challenge?

I walked mostly with some running.

How did you start running and why?

I’m an occasional runner. I never really ran before. One day, I just went to the “Joel Bourgeois” Grande-Digue, NB 15 km challenge held every year and ran 15 km non stop for my 1st run ever. I ran with Merrell sneakers, a heavy shoe made for trail walking. I didn’t know any better. I have run a few 10 km a couple of 1/2 marathons since including the 2017 Las Vegas Rock N’ Roll Marathon in 2017.

How often do you walk and run?

I usually try to walk between 10-20 km every day. I jog and run on occasion.

What was your greatest obstacle while aiming to reach 1000KM?

No real obstacle.

How do you stay motivated and find the time to walk and run?

Motivation comes naturally to me. I am a First Responder and some walking is necessary for me to chill out and de-stress. I walk 12 months a year. If I don’t go walking, I get really annoyed easily. It takes priority over everything.

What advice would you give someone to stay focused on reaching 1000KM in 2020?

Start off walking. It’s really good mentally.

Mark is well on his way to reaching his 2020 goal of 4000KM! You can follow his progress here.

Great work Mark and thank you for sharing a part of your story with us!
