Athlete of the Day

Lucette Hachey Laskey from New Brunswick

I would love to thank the Great Canadian Running Challenge for giving me back the love for walking. Even if it was cold, hot, raining, snowing, windy, I was out there, by myself or with my husband, or with my dogs or friends. Zero excuses, I was out there! So thank you for this challenge.

Did you walk, jog or run this challenge?

I jog/ran a little bit, but I mostly walked.

How often do you walk?

I walked almost every day except during my surgery at the end of January. I was off work for 6 weeks. I could only walk a little bit and very slow for a few weeks but it never stopped me.

What was your greatest obstacle while aiming to reach 1000KM?

My surgery and a knee injury.

How do you stay motivated and find the time to walk and run?

I love setting goals for myself. At first, I was going to walk 3 KM every day to get to 1000 KM by the end of December. As the kilometers kept accumulating (nice weather, I walked longer; weekends, I walked longer), I wanted to do more so I could finish my 1000 KM before the end of December. Mission accomplished! I was done by the end of May. What a great accomplishment for me, going through a knee injury and surgery while aiming for my goal.

Also, a friend and I took a picture of ourselves at every 100 KM mark, which kept this challenge fun and motivating. I also posted every kilometer I walked during the day to my Facebook page, so it kept me accountable. Walking every street in Dieppe was also also another fun idea Caroline came up with, which helped me put in extra kilometers per day. I knew that as soon as I reached 1000 KM in May that I wanted to aim for 2020 KM in 2020!

What advice would you give someone to stay focused on reaching 1000KM in 2020?

One step at a time.
Set your own pace.
Reach out to someone if needed.

Lucette completed 1000 KM in 5 months and set out on a new goal of 2020 KM in 2020. She reached this goal very quickly and by August she was celebrating her achievement!

Congratulations Lucette and we can’t wait to hear how many KMs you reached this year! You can follow Lucette’s progress here.

Thank you for sharing a part of your story with us!
